About the 2025 Canadian Alt Protein Symposium
Why Alternative Proteins?
Alternative proteins are at the forefront of food research and industry innovation in Canada, aiming to address global food security and sustainability challenges. The Canadian Alternative Protein Symposium showcases cutting-edge advancements and industry trends, highlighting the role of alternative proteins in shaping the future of food.
Good Food Institute
The Good Food Institute is a nonprofit think tank and international network of organizations working to accelerate alternative protein innovation.
Globally, meat consumption is the highest it has ever been. According to the FAO, global meat production is projected to increase by as much as 50 percent by 2050.
With plant-based meat, cultivated meat, and fermentation, we can mitigate the environmental impact of our food system, decrease the risk of zoonotic disease, and ultimately feed more people with fewer resources.
GFI support numerous Alternative Protein Project (APP) Chapters worldwide.
Canadian Alt Protein Project Chapters

University of Toronto
The University of Toronto Alt Protein Chapter was founded less than a year ago and has rapidly grown, focusing on building a strong community and connecting people within the alternative protein space. Additionally, we are committed to education and outreach, including a collaboration with the startup De-School to introduce middle and high school students to alternative proteins.

University of Waterloo
The Waterloo Alt Protein Project (APP) is a leading force in Canada’s alternative protein research ecosystem, with expertise in cultivated fish cell line optimization, AI-driven advancements in cultivated meat, and the public health implications of alternative proteins. In addition to research, the team is developed “Alternative Proteins 101,” a pilot course to showcase the value of alternative protein education and advocate for its integration into the university curriculum.

McMaster University
The McMaster University Alt Protein Project was founded just over a year ago, and strives to create a sustainable food system through education, research, and innovation. Our four-year priorities include establishing a vibrant alt-protein community, developing alternative protein courses, and increasing research in this field. This aligns with McMaster’s sustainability strategy, enhancing student engagement and academic-industry relationships.
